Children who want a closer look and adults who enjoy unhurried observation can easily stay longer than expected. The park is compact, yet the close animal encounters and mix of indoor and outdoor areas make it feel more substantial than a quick petting zoo.
Arrive near opening time to avoid the strongest heat. Rain need not cancel the day—the greenhouse offers real shelter, although some encounters remain outdoors.
Lanyang Animal & Plant Kingdom sits in Zhuangwei, Yilan. Its grounds cover more than 3,000 ping and connect outdoor interaction areas with a large indoor greenhouse. Official listings name more than 30 animal species, including capybaras, kangaroos, alpacas, llamas, pelicans, meerkats, tortoises, miniature pigs, parrots and legally kept birds of prey.
The best moments come from lingering: watching a capybara settle into the water, a kangaroo move nearby, or birds among the ferns. Allow two to three hours; families with young children will be more comfortable treating it as a half-day outing.
What stands out
The distance—not just the species list—is what makes it fun.
The park describes its idea as letting people enter the animals' home. Close access is not permission to touch at will; following staff guidance creates a calmer, better encounter.
Capybaras and kangaroos close by
Young visitors can clearly watch how the animals walk, eat and rest instead of searching across a distant enclosure.
Alpacas, llamas and smaller animals
Miniature pigs and poultry add variety, making the visit approachable even for a child's first animal encounter.
Pelican and raptor flight displays
The park schedules ecological talks and flight demonstrations. Check the day's times when you enter, as programs can change.
A fern greenhouse for rainy weather
Staghorn ferns, foliage plants and birds make the large greenhouse more than shelter—it is one of the most atmospheric areas.
How to choose
More fun than Taipei Zoo? It depends on whether you value scale or interaction.
They serve different trips. Taipei Zoo is better for a full day of species diversity, large habitats and conservation learning. Lanyang concentrates on closeness, feeding encounters and shorter walks.
Choose Lanyang for
Families with toddlers, close encounters, a half-day plan, less walking, or a useful indoor option when Yilan turns rainy.
Choose Taipei Zoo for
A much broader species collection, large themed zones, deeper conservation interpretation and a full-day zoo experience.
So finding Lanyang 'more fun' is a fair personal verdict. It has the edge when participation and proximity matter; Taipei Zoo still wins on breadth and scale.

Kind encounters
The closer the animals are, the more their boundaries matter.
Turn a child's excitement into observation: wait to see whether the animal approaches and follow the keeper's directions. It is calmer for the animal and usually makes better photos too.
Use only feed approved by the park; never offer food brought from outside.
Do not chase, pull, corner or force-feed an animal.
Turn off flash, keep voices down and never use food to make an animal perform.
Keep young children with an adult and follow staff directions for strollers and feeding areas.
Build a day
Meet the animals in the morning, then continue toward Dongshan River.
Drivers can add the National Center for Traditional Arts or Dongshan River Water Park, then finish at Luodong Night Market. Without a car, taxis between sights save a half day from disappearing into waits.
